Strand 1
Strand 1 is comprised of all the skills students need to master “to lift the print off the page.” These skills are commonly referred to as Foundational Skills. Strand 1 covers the skills that students need to perform accurately and quickly when connecting sounds to symbols to words to connected text — phonological and phonemic awareness, phonemic decoding (including word-level accuracy and automaticity) and fluency. When you’re teaching a student to recognize the sounds in spoken words, map distinct sounds onto letters, decode an unfamiliar word, or build speed, accuracy and prosody with connected text, you’re working within Strand 1.
